We believe healthcare must evolve.
Metamodern Medicine is a think tank and platform working to embed sustainability, complexity thinking, and systems awareness into the heart of medical education, while supporting clinicians to stay connected, empowered, and well.
There is a sustainability crisis in modern healthcare systems. They cannot carry on as they are. Workforces are exhausted, resources are stretched, and outcomes are worsening. We need to rethink not just what we do, but how we think, embracing multiple perspectives, addressing root causes, and building systems that are sustainable for people, the planet, and future generations.
What we teach tomorrow’s doctors shapes the care patients receive for generations.
Healthcare is still too focused on symptoms, silos, and short-term fixes. We believe medical education must go deeper, training future clinicians to understand root causes, social determinants of health, and how culture, trauma, and systems shape illness.

Healthcare is still too focused on symptoms, silos, and short-term fixes. We believe medical education must go deeper, training future clinicians to understand root causes, social determinants of health, and how culture, trauma, and systems shape illness.
By embedding reflection, relational skills, and systems awareness into training, we can support clinicians to treat people—not just conditions—and to work in partnership with patients to build long-term health.

The climate and ecological crisis is a health crisis.
Healthcare contributes nearly 5% of global carbon emissions, and yet sustainability is rarely part of the medical curriculum. We aim to change that.
We advocate for teaching that links planetary health with patient care, explores the environmental cost of medical practices, and equips students to think critically about sustainability across all levels, from prescribing to policy.
A sustainable health system must care for the ecosystems we all depend on.

We have lost our way. Burnout, moral injury, and psychological distress are now common among healthcare professionals. Many leave the profession altogether. The seeds of this crisis are often sown during training.
Medical education too often prioritises performance over reflection, endurance over wellbeing, and competition over connection. We believe it’s time to change that.
By redesigning the curriculum to foster connection, reciprocity, and a sense of meaning, we can bring lasting change to our health systems.
Metamodern Medicine is a think tank and platform for reimagining health systems in the face of today’s global challenges.
While our core focus is on medical education and curriculum redesign, our scope is broader, exploring sustainable, systems-based solutions to the deeper problems facing healthcare, society, and the planet.
